Sell a course

Describe what you teach, get a shape back, change anything, then put it on your store.

About 6 minutesRead as Markdown

A course is lessons behind a payment. Somebody buys once and comes back to it as often as they like.

Start from a sentence

Open Sell, Offers, then Build a course. Two boxes:

A sentence is enough. The more particular it is, the better the shape comes back.

Press Lay out the course and wait. It usually takes about half a minute, and it comes back with a name, a description, sections and lessons. If you leave while it is being written, it is kept and waits for you on the same page. You can draft three courses a month, and a draft that fails does not count.

Build a course, with the two boxes filled in

It is a draft, and it is kept

Change anything: the name, the description, the section names, every lesson title and every note, and take out any lesson that is wrong. It saves as you go, and it stays a draft until you say it is a course. The order of lessons is changed on the course's Lessons page once it is made.

Nothing about the shape is binding. Take out half of it if half of it is wrong. Pressing the button twice, or losing your connection while it saves, still makes one course, not two.

From a sentence to on sale, in one place

This is being turned on store by store. Where it is on, the builder asks three optional numbers before it lays anything out: how many sections, how many lessons in each, and roughly how long a lesson runs. Leave them blank and we decide; fill them in and that is the shape you get.

After the shape come three more steps, all on the same page:

  1. The videos. A link for each lesson you have filmed. Skip any you have not: a lesson with no video shows its notes instead, which is a real lesson.
  2. The price. One payment for the whole course. It is the course's price on your Products page, so you can change it there later.
  3. On sale. One press makes the course, puts it on your store and sets it on sale. If a lesson has no video and no notes, it says which one and will not put the course on sale until that lesson has one or the other.

Leave at any step and it is all kept, links included. Nothing becomes a course until the last press, unless you choose Keep it off sale for now.

Put the lessons in

Open Lessons. Each lesson takes the notes that go under it, and a lesson can be written from top to bottom: not every course needs a camera.

Videos come from where you already keep them. We do not host video. Put yours on YouTube or Vimeo as unlisted, or on Loom, and paste the link into the lesson's Video box. It plays from there, inside the lesson. We are turning this on store by store, so if a lesson has no Video box yet, it is not on for your store.

Every lesson a buyer would see needs a video or some writing before the course can go on sale, and a course on sale that gets an empty lesson stops selling until it is filled. So a lesson you add to a course that is already on sale is added hidden: fill it in, then press Show it again.

Nothing is deleted. Hide from buyers takes a lesson out of the course and keeps it, with every student's progress on it, and Show it again brings it back.

Put it on sale from the same page. The top of Lessons says whether the course is on sale, takes a price if it has none, and has Put it on sale and Take it off sale. Taking it off sale stops new buyers; everyone who bought it keeps it.

Free preview is the one setting worth thinking about. A lesson marked as a preview plays for anybody, which is how a stranger decides the rest is worth paying for. One or two, near the front.

What a buyer gets

They pay once, and the link in their receipt opens the course. It stays open on that device for thirty days, and every lesson they watch starts the thirty days again, so somebody working through it never gets locked out. Nobody makes an account.

Getting back in on another device is being turned on store by store. Where it is on, the receipt link opens the course once, and after that a student enters the email address they bought with on the course page and we send them a new link. Anybody who asks is told the same thing, so the box cannot be used to find out who bought what. Each student's page under Customers then says how far they got and when they last watched.

When a student says they cannot get in, open them under Customers. Send their course link emails them a fresh one at the address they bought with. If they typed that address wrong at checkout, They typed their address wrong corrects it first. End access closes the course for them straight away, and Give access back opens it again; a refund is separate and is done where you took the payment. Somebody who buys the same course twice keeps their progress, and their second receipt tells them so and that replying reaches you.

Give it, hand out a file, take your students with you

These are being turned on store by store. Where they are on:

A refund ends their access. If your sitelaunch plan lapses, your store stops selling, but people who already bought keep their course.

Your own assistant can build one too. If you have connected Claude or ChatGPT to your store, it can lay out a course, make it, add lessons and videos, and put it on sale, under exactly the rules above: it cannot put a course on sale while a lesson is empty, and it hides a lesson rather than deleting it.

Removing a course somebody bought hides it. Remove on your Products page deletes something nobody has bought. Once somebody has paid for it, it is hidden from your shop instead, and they keep what they paid for.

Watching on your own site, in your look, is also being turned on store by store. Where it is on, a course plays at /learn/ on your own web address, dressed in your colors and fonts, and the link in a receipt takes a student straight there. The course card in your shop says how many lessons it has and roughly how long they run. On the course's Lessons page you can see it as a student sees it before they buy, even while it is off sale.

The video's own link is the key to watching it, the same as any unlisted video. We give it only to people who bought the course, or for a lesson you marked as a free preview, but a buyer who copies it can pass it on. For anything you would not want passed around, Vimeo can keep a video private and let it play only where you allow it.

Price it

The course is an offer, so it is priced on Sell, Offers like anything else, or at the top of its Lessons page, and it appears on your page with the rest.
